Proper Scissor Care

An important task as a Stylist is making sure your scissors are in good condition and functioning properly.  Assessing the condition of your scissors is a simple process and should be performed on a regular basis.  This involves simple tasks such as: 

• cleaning your scissors on a regular basis
• proper storing of the scissors when not in use
• proper tensioning
• proper lubrication

Proper scissor care is important because cutting hair with dull or damaged scissors can lead to unsatisfactory work or cost you unnecessary cutting time.   

• Unsatisfactory work – This can lead to dissatisfied customers which in turn, could cost you business not only from that client but also any possible future clients the dissatisfied customer decides to inform of their experience. 

• Unnecessary cutting – While cutting, going over the same area twice means you are giving away free haircuts.  When scissors are extremely dull or damaged, it is as if you are giving away one or two haircuts every time you are paid for one haircut.  This costs you thousands of dollars and many hours of free time.  This can be avoided by keeping your scissors properly sharpened for a minimal maintenance investment.  A small investment in sharpening and repair work can put thousands of dollars back into your pocket and buys you additional free time.
